Can You Directly Install a Lithium Battery in a NiMH Vehicle?

Short answer: No.

Many customers ask whether they can install a 2023 Aqua lithium battery into a 2013 Prius. The answer is technically no.

Each vehicle’s hybrid system is designed specifically for its original battery type, including:

• Hybrid ECU programming
• Charging algorithm
• Communication protocol
• Voltage curve expectations

For example, some variants of the Toyota Prius 2018 came with Lithium, while others came with NiMH. You cannot interchange them because the ECU programming differs between versions.

Important: You cannot randomly swap OEM lithium packs into NiMH vehicles without risking damage to the hybrid system.

This is the question we get most often, and the answer depends on the model and year, not the brand. Use this as a starting point, then confirm on the car itself.

• Toyota Aqua (2012-2022): NiMH from the factory. Most units imported into Pakistan are NiMH.

Which one fits my vehicle? The pack must match your hybrid system. A 2013 Prius and a 2023 Aqua do not share the same battery, and the ECU programming differs. Tell us the model, year and variant, and we confirm the correct pack.

Choosing the size. Cell count follows the vehicle. The Aqua and Axio use 20 NiMH modules (144V), the Prius and CT200h use 28 (201.6V), the Camry uses 34 (244.8V) and the Crown uses 40 (288V). A lithium conversion doubles the cell count at lower voltage per cell to reach the same total voltage.
