Can You Directly Install a Lithium Battery in a NiMH Vehicle?
Short answer: No.
Many customers ask whether they can install a 2023 Aqua lithium battery into a 2013 Prius. The answer is technically no.
Each vehicle’s hybrid system is designed specifically for its original battery type, including:
- Hybrid ECU programming
- Charging algorithm
- Communication protocol
- Voltage curve expectations
For example, some variants of the Toyota Prius 2018 came with Lithium, while others came with NiMH. You cannot interchange them because the ECU programming differs between versions.
